With a background in teaching, youth work and youth service management Jo was Director of the National Centre for HIV and Sexual Health from 1989-2005.
For 5 years (2000 – 2005) she chaired the National Sex Education Forum
In 2003 Jo wrote a Toolkit of Sexual Health Promotion for the Dept of Health Sexual Health programme, a publication which was rolled out through a series of DH conferences at which she was keynote speaker
In 2004, Jo wrote “You’re Welcome”, a practical hand- book commissioned by the DfES Teenage Pregnancy Unit and DH on making services youth-friendly. These national guidelines on good practice were disseminated through 8 national DH/DfES conferences.
In 2004 Jo chaired a national Sexual Health Training Task Group, charged by the Department of Health to produce a set of guidance on best training practice.
Until October 2005, Jo was a member of the Government’s Independent Advisory Group on Sexual Health and HIV.
Jo runs training courses throughout Britain and Ireland on Practical Strategies for Building Self-Esteem in Young Women, on designing and implementing local Sexual Health Strategies, on Sexual Health Project Management and on Youth Work approaches to sexual health services.
Since 2005, Jo has developed “RU Ready – or not quite yet?” - a national programme of work supporting young people to delay early sex which she is currently running throughout the UK and Ireland. More than 500 people have now trained as Delay Trainers with Jo.
In 2001 Jo was awarded an MBE for her services to Sexual Health.
